Mike Cavanagh is now in his sixties and has no idea how that happened. He lives with his wife, Julie, and two black cats in Bateman’s Bay, Australia. Mike writes various stuffs, plays guitar, composes music, is doing research on rock-wallabies, and spends way too much time playing computer games. He thought he knew who he was until a diagnosis of high-functioning autism in his sixties gave him pause to rethink who he thought he was, and how he got here. So he wrote a memoir, then another… as you do. Stuff about Mike’s writing and music lurks here: |
A warm welcome back to Mike Cavanagh, who has been a regular contributor to our travel writing competitions in previous years. This is his first submission to the 2019 Authors Showcase and what a fun filled piece it is. I hope you enjoy his story Runaways as much as I have. You can read it here.

Wonderful, Mike. Also stirred memories. I was the oldest and when Pete´s age had two young brothers (a third was imminent) to lead into troubles.

So glad you enjoyed it, Amy! My brother really was the black sheep of the family - glad at least a little of his 'rascaliness' rubbed off on me! :) Were your brothers older, younger or 'split'?

A lovely story, Mike, reminiscent of that wide, bright canvas of childhood when all things are possible: building planes and flying away -- remember that one? - packing a bag and leaving, make believe with a carpet and a couple of chairs. Magic! Thank you.

Gosh! That was great. Loved the interaction, action, locations, and relationships between kids and parents. It was a delicious family menage. I used to sit on my younger brother, not fight, just contain him, that is until he outweighed me, than I left him alone. beautifully rendered.

Thanks so much, Nancy - greatly appreciated! My brother, being much bigger as well as older than me, did the same trick to me. Unfortunately I had quite the temper and was not averse at all to grabbing whatever I could get my hand onto and whacking him with it. How we both survived, I have no idea!
