From Vancouver, Canada and a teacher by training, he's lived and taught in his native Canada, Japan and the UAE.
His first book, Crescent Moon Over Laos, was published in 2014. He is working on other ideas that may or may not evolve into a second book, as well as a collection of short stories.
He lives in Vancouver with his long-time partner and their three cats.

Andanza in Andalusia by Laurel Casida

With only a couple of hours left in our June competition, it is a pleasure to feature another newcomer,  Laurel Casida.

Enjoy her travel story Andanza in Andalusia here.

Laurel Casida

I have always loved to read and have devoured books of all types since the age of 5. While I enjoy writing as well, it is not an activity that I practice often, but rather something that I see as an art form which I like and use to capture a particular set of emotions or point of view. That is what is magical to me about the written word, especially in non-fiction. It is nothing more than real life, but the insight given by the author transforms it into a whole other world than the one we usually move through. I write on vacation, when I am in a place I love, when I can't sleep at night – maybe like some people draw, only my pen is not talented enough to stray from the 26 letters the romans left us.

Bucket List: Number 1 – Slieve League by Mike Cavanagh

Our second travel story today in the June competition is from one of our regular supporters, Mike Cavanagh. I am sure you will enjoy his latest entry as much as I have.

You can read Bucket List: Number 1 – Slieve League here.

Mike Cavanagh is now in his sixties and has no idea how he got here. He lives with his wife, Julie, and two black cats in Bateman’s Bay, NSW. The house he and Julie live in is quirky and in need of regular maintenance, as are its owners. Mike's passions are writing, playing guitar, composing music, and, as Julie will only too readily tell you, playing too many role-playing games on PC. Find out more about Mike's book One of its Legs are Both the Same on his site: http://oneofitslegs.org

On the penultimate day of our June competition, I am pleased to be able to feature another two entries. The first is from Alison Galilian, who was one of the winners in our 2017 Travel Highlights Competition.

Read and enjoy her travel story Terror in the Desert - Egypt 1991 here.

Alison Galilian
I was born and brought up in Scotland, but left in my early twenties. I've worked and travelled in Greece, Turkey, Spain, Poland, Israel, Egypt, most of Asia, Australia and Africa. I returned to Israel in 1998 where I took up a post as Senior Teacher at the British Council in Tel Aviv - with occasional stints at the British Council in Egypt and Tanzania. I love travel - the more adventurous the better, but since the birth of my daughter in 2008, I have had to settle down and become an armchair traveller instead! I currently live in rural Northumberland with my husband, daughter and two rescue cats.

I live in the West Country of England, surrounded by a wealth of rural beauty which inspires a lot of my work as a watercolour artist. I’m also an actress, audiobook narrator and writer. Travel, natural history and culture have always been my passions, preferably in the company of family, friends and a large tub of quality ice cream!

The Long Way There by Ronald Mackay

22/6/2018

It is an honour to welcome back Ronald Mackay with his fourth entry in this year's Travel Stories Competition.

You can read his latest story
The Long Way There here.

Hi! I’m Ron Mackay and when, at barely 18 and just finished school, I went walkabout for a couple of years. I worked at different jobs in Scotland, England, France, Spain, Morocco and the Canary Islands (part of Spain but los Canarios see themselves as distinct!). After I completed university in 1967, I worked in Romania and Bulgaria and throughout Eastern Europe as well as in the UK, Singapore and Mexico until I found my true calling in the evaluation of agricultural R&D projects. Then I really started to travel and see the world!

Fortunately, my wife and I settled down (somewhat) in 2012 after we built a house on Rice Lake in Ontario. Acting as the general contractor on that job was one of the most interesting years of my life. I’d be sorry if I’d contracted the job out and missed all the fun!

It is an honour to be able to feature the fourth entry in this year's competition from Lindsay de Feliz. You may remember that Lindsay was the March winner with Consequences.  If you have missed any of the entries you can catch up with them via the 2018 Travel Stories page.

Enjoy Lindsay's latest travel story Lost in Transition here.

Lindsay de Feliz was born, raised and educated in the UK, where she worked in London as a marketing lecturer and a Marketing Director for various financial service companies. In her mid 40s, she decided to follow her dreams and travel the world as a scuba diving instructor, ending up in the Dominican Republic 17 years ago.

She was on a six month contract but fell in love with the country and its people and met and married a Dominican. Having been shot in the throat during a robbery she was unable to dive any more, and now works as a writer, translator and marketing consultant.

Lindsay currently lives in the northeast mountains in the Dominican Republic with her husband, four dogs, one cat, six goats, two geese and numerous chickens. She writes a blog about the Dominican Republic and daily life at www.yoursaucepans.blogspot.com and is the author of the bestselling books “What about your saucepans?” and “Life After My Saucepans”.
