"We reached 8000 feet before starting to head downwards again into the valley of Kathmandu at 5000 feet above sea-level. The road was really bad a lot of the way."

An early start for Fred and Allas as they get on board a 'rickety old bus' for the ten hour journey. After stopping many times at small settlements along the way they eventually arrive in Kathmandu late in the afternoon.

Saturday May 2nd is the day 34 years ago that Fred arrived in Kathmandu.
As you know, I have been running this serialisation of my diary from 1981 since February. There was no way that I could have foreseen that my daily adventures would coincide with the terrible disaster that has overtaken Nepal this last week. My mind has been torn. Should I discontinue publishing this diary as a sign of respect or carry on with what could be regarded as a frivolous traveller’s story? Advice I’ve received has suggested that I should carry on and I have decided to do so. Hopefully I can convey some of the spirit of the Nepalese people so the world can see what was and could be again. I know that all of our thoughts and prayers go out to those who are suffering during these traumatic times. Fred Thank you so much to the five entrants that were featured as part of the April Travel Story Competition: Matthew Dexter, Jeremy Parris, John Rayburn, Gareth Nixon and Kelly Reising. You can read all their stories on the Travel Stories pages.
It was a very hard choice, in fact so difficult that I couldn't decide between two of them, so this month we have joint winners: MATTHEW DEXTER and GARETH NIXON. I will be forwarding their prizes later today. The May Travel Competition is now open and I look forward to reading many more fascinating travel stories over the coming month. Details are on the Competition page. Fred After an overnight journey on the train, Fred and his fellow-travellers arrive in Chapra before getting a bus together towards Raxaul on the Indian/Nepalese border. They cross over the border into Birgunj where they plan to spend the night before heading to Kathmandu the following morning.
"We bounced along for hours on a hard surfaced but really narrow road, heading north and stopping at virtually every little village along the way." Read about Fred's journey as he arrives in Nepal on the Daily Diary page. If you are new to Fred's Blog you can catch up with his travels so far on the February March and April archive pages. |
