"There are some fascinating views around the two valleys today, sometimes looking like cotton-wool, other times steam and often just plain rainclouds."
Join Fred and his fellow-travellers for their strange day on the Daily Diary page.
Fred is woken up by the Indian students to have a look at the snow-capped mountains which were appearing above the clouds. Feeling rough he takes in the views before diving back into bed and sleeping until early afternoon. The rest of the day is spent in the company of the two girls and Phil as they enjoy each other's friendship.

Had a lovely surprise this afternoon when a brand new travel story entry arrived. It is written by Julie Haigh. who modestly claims that she's definitely not a writer. I think that this story proves her wrong. Read her refreshing entry on the Julie Haigh page. Julie is from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. She is a Piano, Organ and Keyboard teacher, bookaholic and WLM Moderator. WLM (We Love Memoirs) has the reputation of being 'the friendliest group on Facebook'. If you would like a personal introduction to this wonderful group, please let me know. You can check it out by following this link: www.facebook.com/groups/welovememoirs Julie has kindly sent a picture of her and her sister to accompany this fabulous story: It is a generally lazy day at the hostel as a Sunday atmosphere seems to prevail. Dave leaves for Kathmandu as he wants to return to a monastery there for full moon on the 17th. Fred spends time with Phil, the Indian students are as inquisitive as ever and at midnight Gayle celebrates her birthday.
"Went to bed reeling a little but once I was lying down everything was beautiful and I lay there just letting my mind wander where it wanted to, feeling really good and at peace with myself. I was awake for a long time holding onto that feeling of peace & contentment before drifting off into a dreamy sleep." Check out today's happenings on the Daily Diary page. Recognise the title, recognise the author ... it's an absolute pleasure to have a second travel story entry from well-known author Frank Kusy. Another enjoyable day as Fred does a lot of thinking about the ideas he had yesterday and all the possibilities that are open to him. He spends the afternoon in Dave's company, exploring Darjeeling and talking a lot about their beliefs and especially Tibetan Buddhism.
"Dave & I then wandered around and walked down through the town and a short way down the hillside where we sat on a fence looking out over some beautiful tea plantations. We became quite a spectacle for the passing local people as we sat engrossed in conversation." Read about today's daydreams and discussions on the Daily Diary page. N.B. Please excuse the incorrect dates at the top of the blogs at the moment. This issue has been reported to Weebly and they are looking into it. Waking up to a damp day, Fred is still not feeling top-fit. After breakfast he returns to the hostel where he writes some letters and gets to know more about his fellow-guests at the hostel. He then heads out to explore Darjeeling and has a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon immersing himself in his surroundings. This is a real bumper diary day as he describes everything going on around him and in his own head.
“The town is built like a series of landings joined by flights of steps and almost vertical lanes. The ‘top floor’ is mainly for visitors. Along the Mall or Main Street are the large hotels, café’s, handsome villas and attractive shops." Enjoy reading about Fred's adventures from 34 years ago on the Daily Diary page. Fred wakes up today feeling a lot better. After a luxurious shower, he finishes his course of medications and has some breakfast at a nearby restaurant. During the day he manages to explore some of Darjeeling and has some interesting conversations with his fellow-travellers.
"After the Post Office I went in search of the ganjha shop which I found after a few minutes hidden away behind some boards. There was a handwritten list of prices just for grass, no hash or anything else. I bought 10g for R4-80 which is incredible. I couldn’t believe it was happening as I handed over my money and got a packet in return." Join Fred on the Daily Diary page as he starts to explore Darjeeling. Fred is still feeling pretty rough but a lot better than yesterday. He continues to take his prescribed medications and spends most of the day dozing, reading and chatting to some of his fellow-travellers staying at the hostel.
"Dave had been a prison officer in Australia and was therefore very interested in my reactions to the time I spent in Thai prison. I had related a short version of events to the other three earlier on. It’s certainly an experience which interests other people." Read more about Fred's day from 34 years ago on the Daily Diary page. After a restless night from the cold of Darjeeling and violent cramps, Fred wakes up in a lot of pain. After struggling through the morning trying to get some letters written and the next section of the diary ready to send to Jan, he heads down into town. Whilst there he decides to visit the doctor and find out what is wrong with him.
"I went to a place called ‘The Economic Pharmacy’ and after a short wait saw a Dr. Adhya who gave me a thorough check-up and asked many questions about where I’d been and how long the cold had been hanging on." Find out about the doctor's diagnosis on today's Daily Diary page. After a scary start to the bus journey out of Nepal yesterday evening, the rest of the trip is uneventful and Fred arrives in Kakavita, the border town with India in the early hours of the morning. Along with Mike and Chris, his new found Danish friends, they first of all take a jeep to Siliguri before getting a taxi for the long trip up to Darjeeling.
" The landscape had changed completely since last night as we were now travelling over the plains of south-eastern Nepal with the Himalayas standing out as dark shadows in the background." Read about today's fascinating journey on the Daily Diary page. |
