To date we have been serialising Fred's Diary 1981 on a daily basis. As Lynn and I are off on holiday for a week, today's post includes the next 8 days of the diary.
Coincidentally this period covers the days that Fred went trekking in Nepal 34 years ago. If you have been following the diary daily then you can continue to do so over the coming week. Alternatively you could read all about Fred's trek in one read. As always, go to the Daily Diary page. As you read about Fred's trek, please spare a thought for the people of Nepal who are still suffering so much after the recent earthquakes. Fred A very mixed day weather-wise, with lots of heavy rain showers. Fred walks the 2-3 kilometres to the other part of town where the airfield and expensive hotels are situated. He makes enquiries about organised treks but eventually decides to go it alone.
"At 4-00 p.m. a real thunderstorm set in with heavy rain. A few people came onto the verandah, most of them women returning home after a heavy day’s work carrying wood and water about." You can find out more about Fred's day on the Daily Diary page. We are being spoilt with the amount and quality of the travel story entries that have been submitted for this month's competition .
Our latest feature is from Anne Durrant and it is a real pleasure to include it. Anne's intro is very brief but will resonate with you all I am sure: "After Phil had 2 heart attacks, and open heart surgery - this adventurous couple decided to retire and start living their dream. The following is an account of their first trip in their newly acquired Campervan." Read this fantastic story on the Anne Durrant page. Fred is awake early to appreciate the start of his first full day in Pokhara. He has some beautiful views from the window in his room as he sees the sun rising above the lake and the surrounding mountains. Later on he spends time exploring the lakeside and the irrigated plains near the town.
"I walked for a long time but eventually rested on a grassy knoll by the lakeside amongst the cows, water buffaloes, dragonflies and many other forms of wildlife." As you read about Fred exploring his new surroundings on the Daily Diary page, please give a thought to the people of Nepal as they continue to struggle against the power of Mother Nature after the most recent earthquake. It is a real privilege to feature our latest travel story entry. It is from Lucinda E. Clarke, well known author of four fantastic travel memoirs: Amie: An African Adventure Walking Over Eggshells Truth, Lies and Propaganda: In Africa More Truth, Lies and Prpoganda: In Africa For more detail check out Lucinda's Amazon author's page: www.amazon.co.uk/Lucinda-E-Clarke/e/B00FDWB914 Born in Dublin, dragged up in the Cotswolds, matured and finished off in Liverpool. Family not wildly enthusiastic about following grandfather into Fleet Street (unfeminine, unreliable and dangerous), so she was packed off to dockland Liverpool to get teaching qualifications (safe, respectable and pensionable). Lucinda returned south extremely good at self defence. She married and went crofting in Scotland, a disaster, and bred dogs among other things, less of a disaster. She moved to Kenya with 3 week old daughter, abandoned in the bush, then on to Libya, surviving riots, public hangings, imprisoned husband and eventual deportation. Moved to Botswana – still teaching – opened and ran horse riding school with ‘How to…’ book in hand. Emigrated to South Africa taught for four years, but since 1984, she wrote freelance full time, for major corporations, UNESCO, UNICEF and the SABC for both radio and television. Moving into television production in 1986, she has received over 20 awards, specializing in the fields of education, documentaries, municipal and government. She has also worked on radio in both Libya and South Africa, had a newspaper column, and was commissioned to write two educational text books. In 1996 she set up her own video production company, and retired to Spain in 2008. Well that was the plan… Read her fascinating travel story on the Lucinda E. Clarke page. This morning Fred makes an early start. After saying goodbye to Allas he heads off to get the bus to Pokhara. He is one of the first to arrive and has to wait around for a while before they eventually get underway.
"The bus is a 28-seater reputedly from Switzerland (although it must be very old) and proudly proclaims on the side ‘Swiss Mini-Couch’, it wasn’t as comfortable as that." Follow Fred's travels on the Daily Diary page. After a night of weird and wonderful dreams, Fred wakes up feeling a little better. He spends the morning writing letters to Rita and his mother. In between showers he then heads into town and makes final preparations for tomorrow's trip to Pokhara.
"We got our first glimpse of the snow-capped Himalayas which usually hide behind the clouds. It was a lovely sight and we stood gazing at the beauty of it for a full five minutes." Read about today's events on the Daily Diary page. After a restless night's sleep due to stomach pains Fred feels under the weather most of the day. Despite this he and Allas manage to go into town for the afternoon to get a few things done. In contrast to the way Fred feels, the weather is really sunny.
"The skies were blue, it was very hot and from the central park in Kathmandu one could see the ring of mountains around the valley very clearly, with the cumulus clouds forming a beautiful contrast." You can find out more about this day 34 years ago on the Daily Diary page. Fred wakes up after a really good night's sleep and some pleasant dreams. It is Election Day in Nepal and Cup Final day in England. The day turns out to be a fairly restful one as neither Allas or Fred are feeling particularly well.
"There is no T.V. in Nepal so we won't have a chance of seeing the Cup Final live." Read about today's events on the Daily Diary page. |
